Pediatric Epilepsy Center
Delivering Care with Compassion
Epilepsy affects approximately 470,000 children across the nation. For many families, treating epilepsy is about managing health day-to-day. As your child grows, you want a team who can address how their condition responds to the different stages of life — while minimizing, and in some cases eliminating, epileptic occurrences. With the pediatric epilepsy team at the Orlando Health Children's Neuroscience Institute, supported by the Leon Pediatric Neuroscience Fund, you have a partner who offers greater hope and opportunities for life-changing outcomes. Using the most advanced technology and solutions available, our team controls seizures and the side effects of epilepsy.
Our epilepsy program, part of the Leon Pediatric Neuroscience Fund, is designated as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center (the highest rating) by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). This means we’re able care for all conditions on the epilepsy spectrum.
A Team Approach for Complete Care
Our expert staff will work with your family to determine the most effective treatment – from medication therapy to advanced surgical options – to maximize your child’s quality of life. This will include collaboration from a team of pediatric neurologists, epileptologists, neurosurgeons, nurse practitioners, ketogenic dietary nutritionists and neuropsychologists to find a plan that fits your child’s unique epilepsy needs.
In addition, your family also has access to integrated health services and leading-edge technology to help manage your child’s care, such as:
Dedicated pediatric intensive care team
Blood tests for genetic-metabolic panels
Video Electroencephalograms (EEGs) — for detection of seizure onset
Diagnostic Imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
Functional MRIs for language, motor and vision
Nuclear medicine (SPECT and PET Scans)
Genetic epilepsy assessments

In 45 Seconds, Everything Turned Upside Down
“We got a second change with Delaney because of the doctors and nurses who never game up on us.”
- Michelle, mother of Delaney
Michelle and her husband, Ben, became concerned when Delaney started waking up crying in the middle of the night and refusing to nap. With two older children, the experienced parents knew something was wrong. Then came the first seizure. Over time, Delaney was having seizures every week, and doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong. During a PET scan at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital, they discovered a lesion and decided surgery was the best option. Delaney is now seizure free.

"Dr. Jafrani was right there fighting for him every step of the way. He told me not to thank him until we reached six months post-surgery. But I thanked him anyway, because I knew he had done everything to give my son a better quality of life. Both Dr. Bello and Dr. Jafrani have been incredible blessings on this journey."

“The doctors really and truly have the best interest of my child, not what’s going to be best for the hospital, but what’s going to best for the child.”

Teresa Graham thought it was odd when her toddler would announce she had to use the bathroom, but then the urge would quickly pass. She grew even more concerned when Zoë started complaining about pain in her left side. “As she got older, it would happen every week. It would just hit her like a ton of bricks, and she’d be down on all fours."

At two and half months old, Penelope had a cornea transplant that partially restored her sight. Complications caused by steroids aiding in her recovery brought attention to gastrointestinal issues. And due to anesthesia from multiple surgeries, Penelope suffered a slowed digestive tract and constipation. She had trouble chewing solid foods and consuming enough calories, leaving her mother, Anne, concerned about Penelope's growth and weight gain. "Orlando Health has a fabulous institute which Penelope needed. That’s how it just became a regular part of my life."
