Bio
Matthew Johnston, MD, is a fellowship-trained thoracic surgeon with Orlando Health Cancer Institute's Rod Taylor Thoracic Care Center. Dr. Johnston cares for patients with lymphoma, lung cancer and a variety of chest conditions using minimally invasive surgical and robotic-assisted options. He also specializes in endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) surgery to treat hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.
Dr. Johnston's Training
After graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of South Florida Honors College in Tampa, Dr. Johnston earned his medical degree from Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee. He went on to complete a general surgery residency with Orlando Health and cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he served as an instructor in thoracic surgery.
About Dr. Johnston
Dr. Johnston is certified in laparoscopic surgery by the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and a member of the American College of Surgeons and Golden Key International Honor Society.
He is an inaugural member of the Collaborative Quality Advisory Council at Orlando Health and also has published his work in the American Surgeon Journal and presented studies at annual medical conferences.
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, Dr. Johnston is proud to be a third-generation thoracic surgeon.

The Patient Satisfaction Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions, shown above, from our nationally-recognized Press-Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question.
Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.
The comments are submitted by patients and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not necessarily reflect the views of Orlando Health.
Ratings may not be present for certain physicians of Orlando Health Physician Group and Orlando Health Physician Associates because:
- The physician has not yet met the minimum number of 30 patient satisfaction surveys to be eligible for display.
- They may be a researcher or type of provider that does not see patients.
