Second Opinion

At Orlando Health UF Health Cancer Center, we understand that receiving a cancer diagnosis can be difficult to process. It is normal to feel a wide range of emotions during this time, including anger, fear and uncertainty. It is also common to have many questions and doubts, so we recommend getting a second opinion. For your convenience, we offer both in-person and virtual appointments for second opinions.

When to Get a Second Opinion

If you have any concerns or questions about your cancer diagnosis, or simply aren’t sure what it all means, it is a good idea to get a second opinion before starting treatment. You may want to get a second opinion if you:

  • Have doubts about the diagnosis being correct
  • Do not quite understand what treatment has been offered to you and how it may help you
  • Feel that you would like to know if there are other choices/options for your care
  • Want to ask another doctor questions about the proposed treatment plans and side effects
  • Have started your treatment, and things are not going the way you thought they should
  • Have a rare or unusual type of cancer
  • Feel uncomfortable with your current doctor
  • Have family and friends who want you to get a second opinion
  • Would like a second opinion from an oncologist who specializes in your type of cancer, rather than from one who is a generalist

How to Get a Second Opinion

First, tell your current doctor about your plans and ask for recommendations to get a second opinion. Next, contact your insurance company to make sure it will cover a second opinion appointment with another doctor. At Orlando Health UF Health Cancer Center, we can help you determine your insurance coverage and help you set up an appointment with one of our cancer specialists.

Benefits of Getting a Second Opinion

A second opinion gives you the chance to talk about your cancer diagnosis with a different doctor. Our cancer specialists will review all of your test results and help you figure out what to do next.

The benefits of a second opinion include:

  • Confirming a cancer diagnosis and cancer stage are correct
  • Discussing all the treatment options, including advanced surgical, medical oncology and radiation therapy services, as well as clinical trials
  • Getting additional insights and a different perspective about your cancer diagnosis from a multidisciplinary team
  • Confirming that your treatment plan from your existing oncologist is correct, or understanding why other options could be better for your situation
  • Feeling more confident about your choices and care

How We Can Help

Our cancer specialists can give you a second opinion on a cancer diagnosis and guide you through any necessary exams or follow-up appointments. We can also create a personalized treatment plan for you.

Logistics of Your Appointment

We offer appointments either in person or using telemedicine (connecting you with a physician from your phone, tablet or computer):

  • In-person appointments can be at our main center in Downtown Orlando, or at one of our satellite locations closer to your home, depending on the specialist you would see.
  • Telemedicine appointments from the comfort of your home are offered using a videoconferencing app from Microsoft, which is free to download for mobile phones, Apple or Android tablets, or laptops/desktop computers. When you schedule an appointment, our team will help you set this up.
